Lead plant- Native

General Information

Lead Plant is a great native perennial shrub.  This plant is native to a good portion of the central United States.  The Lead Plant is great in meadows, prairie gardens or other naturalized areas.  The foliage grows in fronds, similar to some types of fern plants.  The small, narrow leaves are gray-green in color.  The stems of this plant have a hairy appearance.  Large, narrow clusters of flowers, up to 8 inches long, typically bloom early to mid summer.  They are a nice bluish-purple in color.  Very attractive to butterflies!

Additional Information

Amorpha canescens grows to a height of 2 to 3 feet, with a spread of 24 to 30 inches.  It is recommended for USDA climate zones 2 to 9.  Lead Plant tends to grow best in full sunlight.  It does well with average to low amounts of moisture in well drained soils.  Tends to have good success in difficult soil conditions.  Not know to have any serious disease or insect issues.
